In an expression of value reassignment — that is, taking something that is ruined and turning it into something of value — the "Dirty Laundry" art show, opening Thursday at Chinatown's Nuuanu Gallery at Marks Garage (1161 Nu'uanu Ave.), is a collection of stained T-shirts that have been silk-screened to incorporate the stains into the shirts' designs.

Q. My 4-year-old daughter still has very bad tantrums. When she throws a tantrum when we are on an outing, I immediately take her home. However, this affects her older sister, who complains that she did nothing wrong but is also being punished. Is there something I can do so that the older girl is not affected by her sister's punishments? By the way, I'm typically alone, so leaving the younger child with another parent is not an option.

Cheer on the Waipi'o Little League champions at a parade that begins at 5 p.m. on Labor Day, along Kalakaua Avenue from Fort DeRussy to Kapi'olani Park. It's called Parade of Champions, and also pays tribute to other Isle athlete heroes.

808 Urban art showdown

A b-boy, DJ, MC and graffiti battle takes place from noon to 5 p.m. today at the Palama Settlement Gym, 810 N. Vineyard Blvd. It's sponsored by 808 Urban, a nonprofit that aims to replace random tagging with murals of artwork and to encourage at-risk youths toward positive goals.

A taste of Okinawan heritage

All things Okinawan will be celebrated at the 26th annual Okinawan Festival this weekend. That means pig's feet soup, yakisoba, Okinawan soba, shoyu pork, Okidog (hot dog and chili, wrapped in a tortilla with shredded shoyu pork and lettuce), andagi, and Andadog (hot dog on a stick, dipped in andagi batter and deep-fried). OINK! Yes, that's just the food.

DULUTH, Ga. — Jonathan Merritt is a Baptist preacher's son with a pristine evangelical lineage. It was his dad, the Rev. James Merritt, who reportedly brought President Bush to tears in the days after the Sept. 11 attacks when he called the president "God's man for this hour." The Rev. Jerry Falwell was like a grandfather.
