The Hawaiian Islands

February 20th, 2007 by Keoni

Hawaii is an archipelago made of 18 island and atolls, but we usually only see 8 “main islands” on a map of Hawaii. All the islands were formed by volcanic activity from a hot spot in the Earth’s crust. The tectonic plate under the Pacific Ocean just keeps sliding over the hot spot moving the older islands away from the the source of the magma. Of course, this has all taken place over a long period of time, not on any kind of human scale.

The current volcanic activity is on the Island of Hawaii, The Big Island. Kilauea just keeps erupting and the Loihi Seamount will keep growing and might become the 19th Hawaiian Island.
