Sara Arnold, who spends hours each week turning old leather belts into sleek, modern-looking rugs, considers herself part of the "alternative crafts" movement.

Untangle those strings of lights and dust off the mechanical Christmas characters — the holidays are coming, and it's time to work on those festive home displays for all to see.

"People can sing these songs easily," explained the director of music for St. John Vianney Church, his hands curving like an arc over the keyboard.

"A Piece of Cloth," Sunday at Ward Centre and Ward Warehouse amphitheater, is a Temari-sponsored event that will demonstrate why fabrics are tangible expressions of history, rituals and legends.

Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. today for a Jan. 17 concert by Gloria Estefan. The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Blaisdell Arena.
